Detailed Description
Functionality & Mechanism
This interactive educational game from The Center on Representative Government at Indiana University facilitates learning about American government. The platform utilizes primary source materials—including documents, photographs, and political cartoons from the Library of Congress—to guide students through five thematic stories. Each story explores a core concept like federalism, voting rights, or the legislative process through a combination of introductory videos, analysis tools, trivia challenges, and mini-games to support engagement with the historical content.
Development & Context
- The Center on Representative Government developed the app with a $315,000 grant from the Library of Congress's Teaching with Primary Sources Program.
- It was created in partnership with game design team Half Full Nelson and an advisory group of Indiana teachers to inform students about government.
- The news coverage notes the tool was tested in four states with over 600 teachers and debuted at a National Council for Social Studies conference.
Intended Use & Scope
This app is designed as an educational tool for middle and high school students in government, history, and social studies programs. Its stated purpose is to provide a non-partisan resource for teaching the tenets of representative government. Indiana University center launches "Engaging Congress" interactive game
The Center on Representative Government at Indiana University launched "Engaging Congress" to teach middle and high school students about American government, using primary-source documents from the Library of Congress in an interactive game format. The center received a $315,000 Library of Congress grant in 2015 to develop the game and tested it with over 600 teachers across four states. "The goal of this game is to inform students about the legislative process and to do so in a format that is consistent with how young people today receive information," said Mike Sample, the center's director.
Library of Congress launches three new learning apps
The Library of Congress collaborated with Indiana University's Center on Representative Government to develop Engaging Congress, an app featuring game-based learning activities on representative government and its current societal challenges. Representatives from Indiana University unveiled the app during the National Council for Social Studies annual conference in San Francisco on November 17 and 19. "We are delighted to see the creative ways in which these three interactives support students' investigations of government, legislation and the role each of us can play in participating in our nation's civic life," said Lee Ann Potter, director of educational outreach at the Library of Congress.
