3. Cookies and Analytics
3.1 Cookie Categories
We use two categories of cookies:
Essential Cookies (always active): These are required for the Site to function properly. They include authentication session cookies and your cookie consent preferences. These cookies cannot be disabled without breaking core Site functionality.
Analytics Cookies (require your consent): We use a third-party analytics service to understand how visitors use the Site. Analytics cookies collect anonymized usage data including pages visited, time on site, and interaction events. Analytics cookies are only loaded after you provide consent through our cookie consent banner.
3.2 Cookie Consent
When you first visit the Site, a cookie consent banner will appear at the bottom of the screen. You may choose to accept all cookies, reject non-essential cookies (which blocks analytics), or manage your preferences. Your choice is stored in a cookie (consent_preferences) that persists for 12 months. You can change your cookie preferences at any time through the “Cookie Settings” link in the Site footer. We do not use advertising or marketing cookies.
3.3 Analytics Events
When you consent to analytics cookies, we track events such as page views, search queries, filter usage, app store click-throughs, likes, and content expansion interactions. These events help us measure how effectively the platform connects users with research apps. We do not send any personally identifiable information (such as user IDs, email addresses, or IP addresses) in analytics event parameters.
4. How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only in the following limited circumstances:
- Service Providers: We use third-party service providers to operate the Site, including a cloud database and authentication provider, a web hosting and deployment provider, a third-party authentication service (Google), an analytics provider, and an error monitoring service. These providers access your information only as necessary to perform their services and are bound by their own privacy policies.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose your information if required to do so by law, in response to valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of App Atheneum, our Users, or the public.
- Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of our assets, your information may be among the assets transferred. We will notify you of any such change in ownership or control of your personal information.
- Aggregated Data: We may share aggregated, de-identified information (such as total site visits or most-popular categories) publicly or with partners. This data cannot be used to identify you.
5. Data Storage and Security
Your information is stored in a cloud-hosted database platform and processed through our web hosting infrastructure, both located in the United States. We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), row-level security policies on our database, secure authentication token handling via httpOnly cookies, rate limiting on sensitive API endpoints, and security headers (Content-Security-Policy, Strict-Transport-Security, and others). However, no method of transmission over the internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as necessary to provide the Services and fulfill the purposes described in this Policy:
- Authentication data (Google profile information) is retained for the duration of your account’s existence. If you do not sign in for 24 months, we may delete your authentication data.
- Like data is retained as long as your account exists or until you remove a like.
- Email subscription data is retained until you unsubscribe, at which point we mark your record as inactive but retain it for suppression purposes to avoid re-sending.
- Analytics data is retained according to our analytics provider’s default retention settings (up to 14 months for user-level data).
- Server logs and error tracking data are retained for up to 90 days.
