These Terms of Service (“Terms”) apply to all persons (“Users”) who visit, register with, or otherwise use the services (“Services”) provided through the website appsfromresearch.com (the “Site”), operated by App Atheneum, LLC (“App Atheneum,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). Your use of the Site and the Services is governed by these Terms.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS CAREFULLY BEFORE ACCESSING THE SITE OR USING THE SERVICES. BY ACCESSING OUR SITE OR USING OUR SERVICES, YOU ARE AGREEING TO THESE TERMS AND OUR PRIVACY POLICY (appsfromresearch.com/privacy), WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE A REGISTERED USER. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO ANY OF THESE TERMS, DO NOT ACCESS THE SITE OR USE THE SERVICES.

1. About Apps From Research

Apps From Research is a web platform that curates and organizes mobile and web applications developed through research initiatives at universities, federal agencies, and research institutions. The platform provides users with access to trustworthy, evidence-based apps across seven scientific disciplines, focusing specifically on research-validated solutions. Apps From Research is operated by App Atheneum, LLC.

2. Service Description

Apps From Research allows you to discover mobile and web applications created through scholarly and scientific work by browsing the Site, searching our curated directory, viewing curated collections, reading associated research publications and evidence classifications, and receiving periodic updates via email. Subject to these Terms, you may view the Site and use the Services at no cost. The platform assigns each app an evidence classification tier and context-sensitive tagline based on published research. This evidence system is informational only and does not constitute an endorsement, recommendation, or guarantee of any app’s quality, safety, or fitness for a particular purpose.

3. Right of Access and Eligibility

In order to use the Site or Services, you must be at least 13 years of age. If you are under the age of majority in your jurisdiction but at least 13 years old, you may use the Site only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to be bound by these Terms. By using the Site, you represent and warrant that you meet these eligibility requirements.

4. User Accounts and Authentication

Certain features of the Site, including the ability to “like” applications, require authentication via Google OAuth. When you sign in using your Google account, we receive limited profile information (your name, email address, and profile image) from Google. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your Google account and for all activities that occur under your authentication session. You agree to notify us promptly of any unauthorized use of your account. We do not store your Google password and have no control over Google’s authentication processes.

5. Availability

We strive to make the Site available at all times but cannot guarantee that the Site will operate continuously without interruptions or that it will be error-free. We are not liable if the Site or Services are unavailable at any time or for any period, or for the consequences of any errors or inaccuracies in the Site or the Services.

6. Content and Third-Party Applications

You acknowledge that the mobile applications, web applications, and other software products listed, featured, or linked to on the Site are not provided, owned, or hosted by App Atheneum. The Site is a directory and discovery platform; we do not develop, distribute, or control any of the listed applications. App Atheneum is not responsible for the content, functionality, accuracy, availability, or safety of any listed application, whether mobile or web-based. Downloading, accessing, or using any application discovered through the Site is at your own risk and subject to the terms and conditions of the respective distribution platform (such as the Apple App Store or Google Play Store) or the application’s own website and terms of service.

7. Evidence Classification Disclaimer

The Site assigns evidence classification tiers and taglines to listed applications based on analysis of published research. These classifications are provided for informational purposes only. They do not constitute medical advice, professional recommendations, or endorsements. The evidence classification system reflects the quantity and type of published research associated with an app and should not be interpreted as a guarantee of effectiveness, safety, or suitability for any particular use. Users should exercise independent judgment and consult qualified professionals before making decisions based on our evidence classifications, particularly in health, medical, or clinical contexts.

8. Restrictions on Use

As a User of the Site or Services, you agree not to:

  1. copy, reproduce, scrape, or systematically download content from the Site by automated means (including bots, crawlers, or robots) without prior written consent;
  2. use the Site, Services, or any information provided by the Site in a way that is unlawful or that brings harm to App Atheneum, the Site, any other Users, or any third party;
  3. submit, post, email, or transmit any content that is unlawful, harmful, abusive, libelous, or otherwise objectionable;
  4. impersonate any person or entity or falsely state or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity;
  5. transmit any content that contains a computer virus or any other code that can disrupt, destroy, or limit the functionality of the Site or any associated systems;
  6. attempt to manipulate the like/engagement system through scripted, automated, or fraudulent interactions;
  7. intentionally or unintentionally violate any applicable local, state, national, or international law;
  8. attempt to breach or disable any security mechanism used by the Site or the Services;
  9. copy, modify, create a derivative work of, reverse engineer, decompile, or otherwise attempt to extract any source code of software used to provide or maintain the Site;
  10. use the Site or Services for any commercial purpose or for the benefit of any third party in a manner that violates these Terms; or
  11. induce any third party to engage in any of the foregoing prohibited activities.

9. Collections and Curated Content

The Site features curated collections of applications organized around specific themes, use cases, or expertise areas. Collections may be created by site administrators or by invited domain experts. Access to collection creation tools is by invitation only. If you are invited to create a collection, you agree that all collections are subject to administrative review and approval before publication, that App Atheneum retains full discretion over publication timing and content, and that your name and profile may be displayed as curator attribution alongside published collections.

10. Links to Third-Party Websites and App Stores

The Site includes links to the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, external research publications, news articles, developer websites, and other third-party resources. We are not responsible for the content, availability, or privacy practices of these external sites. Clicking links to app stores or other external sites will take you outside the Site and may subject you to the terms and conditions of those third parties. Any transactions you complete on external sites are solely between you and the third party.

11. Intellectual Property

The Site, including its design, layout, evidence classification system, curated collections, original text, and software, is protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. The “Apps From Research” name and associated marks are the property of App Atheneum, LLC. App icons, names, screenshots, descriptions, and other application-specific content displayed on the Site remain the property of their respective owners. You may not reproduce, redistribute, or make unauthorized commercial use of content from the Site except as permitted under applicable law.

12. Submitted Content

By submitting an application or other content to the Site (including through the Submit an App page or any future submission mechanism), you represent and warrant that you are the owner of the content or have authorization from the rightful owner to submit it. By submitting content, you grant App Atheneum a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free, sublicensable, and transferable license to reproduce, modify, and publish the submitted content through the Site for the purpose of displaying and making it available to Users.

We reserve the right to refuse to publish or to remove from the Site any submitted applications or content that we consider to violate these Terms, to be illegal or otherwise objectionable, or that does not adhere to the purpose and standards of the Site. We also reserve the right to classify applications and assign evidence tiers in our sole discretion.

13. Email Communications

If you subscribe to our email updates, you consent to receiving periodic communications about new research apps, collections, and platform updates. You may unsubscribe at any time by following the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us directly. We will not sell or share your email address with third parties for their marketing purposes.

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless App Atheneum, LLC and its agents, owners, members, affiliates, employees, contractors, suppliers, officers, and directors from any and all claims, suits, damages, costs, fines, penalties, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising from or connected with your use or misuse of the Site or the Services, including but not limited to your downloading, installation, or use of any apps discovered through this Site, or your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party or any law. App Atheneum reserves the right to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter otherwise subject to indemnification by you, in which event you will cooperate in asserting any available defenses.

16. DMCA Policy

App Atheneum respects the intellectual property rights of others. If you are a copyright owner or authorized agent and believe any Site content infringes upon your copyright, you may submit a notification of claimed infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to our Designated Copyright Agent at legal@appatheneum.com. Your notification must include:

  1. a physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or authorized representative;
  2. identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed;
  3. identification of the infringing material and information reasonably sufficient for us to locate it;
  4. your contact information, including name, mailing address, phone number, and email address;
  5. a statement that you have a good faith belief that the use of the material is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; and
  6. a statement under penalty of perjury that the information in the notification is accurate and that you are authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner.

17. Termination

You acknowledge that we have the right to suspend or disable your access to our Site and/or Services at any time, with or without notice. We may in our sole discretion and at any time discontinue providing the Site or the Services or any part thereof, with or without notice. You agree that we will not be liable to you or any third party for any termination of access to the Site or Services. Upon termination, your right to use the Services will immediately cease, but provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including Sections 11, 14, 18, 19, and 20) will remain in effect.

18. Warranty Disclaimer

YOUR USE OF THE SITE AND SERVICES IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. ALL SITE CONTENT AND SERVICES ARE PROVIDED ON AN “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS, STATUTORY, OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. YOUR USE OF THE SITE, THE SERVICES, AND ANY PRODUCTS DOWNLOADED OR OBTAINED AFTER VIEWING THE SITE OR USING THE SERVICES IS ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION AND RISK. APP ATHENEUM MAKES NO WARRANTY THAT THE SITE WILL MEET YOUR REQUIREMENTS, OPERATE IN AN UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE MANNER, OR THAT ERRORS OR DEFECTS WILL BE CORRECTED. WE MAKE NO WARRANTY REGARDING THE QUALITY, ACCURACY, TIMELINESS, TRUTHFULNESS, COMPLETENESS, OR RELIABILITY OF ANY CONTENT, INCLUDING EVIDENCE CLASSIFICATIONS, WITHIN THE SITE OR SERVICES. TO THE FULL EXTENT PERMISSIBLE UNDER APPLICABLE LAW, APP ATHENEUM DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL SUCH WARRANTIES.

19. Limitation of Liability

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL APP ATHENEUM, LLC, ITS OWNERS, MEMBERS, OFFICERS, AGENTS, EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS, OR SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE TO YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THESE TERMS OR THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SITE OR SERVICES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOST PROFITS, LOSS OF DATA, OR LOSS OF GOODWILL. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY TO YOU IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR USE OF THE SITE IN THE TWELVE MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM OR (B) FIFTY US DOLLARS ($50.00).

Some jurisdictions may not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental, special, consequential, or other damages. In such jurisdictions, our liability will be limited to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law.

20. Dispute Resolution and Governing Law

You agree that any controversy or claim arising out of or relating to these Terms and/or your use of the Site and Services shall be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accordance with its Commercial Arbitration Rules. The arbitration shall be conducted in Payne County, Oklahoma, and judgment on the award rendered by the arbitrator(s) may be entered in any court having jurisdiction thereof. These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Oklahoma, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You agree that personal jurisdiction and venue are in the state and federal courts located in Payne County, Oklahoma.

21. Changes to These Terms

App Atheneum reserves the right to modify these Terms at any time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Effective Date” at the top of this page and, where feasible, provide notice through the Site. Your continued use of the Site or Services following the posting of changes constitutes acceptance of those changes. We encourage you to review these Terms periodically.

22. General Provisions

These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and App Atheneum, LLC with respect to the Site and Services and supersede any prior agreements. If any provision of these Terms is determined to be invalid or unenforceable, that provision will be enforced to the maximum extent permissible and the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms will not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. The waiver of any right or provision will be effective only if in writing and signed by a duly authorized representative of App Atheneum, LLC. You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your rights hereunder without our prior written consent.
