Detailed Description

Functionality & Mechanism This training manual delivers technical guidance on seven commercially successful cherry training systems, including Kym Green Bush (KGB) and Upright Fruiting Offshoots (UFO). The resource outlines decision criteria for system selection based on horticultural factors such as variety, rootstock, and labor availability. It provides detailed protocols for plant spacing and pruning throughout the first three years of tree establishment. The manual is structured to support growers in selecting and implementing an optimal system for new plantings.

Evidence & Research Context

  • The publication synthesizes established horticultural practices for seven distinct, commercially successful cherry training systems.
  • The associated research details systems applicable to major cherry-producing regions, including the Pacific Northwest and Michigan.
  • Guidance is specifically tailored for implementation with whip nursery trees, a common starting point for new orchards.
  • The content provides a framework for selecting a system by systematically evaluating variables like growing conditions, variety, and management skills.

Intended Use & Scope This manual is intended for commercial cherry growers as a decision-support and technical training resource for establishing new orchards. Its primary utility is in system selection and early-stage pruning management. The resource does not address mature tree maintenance, pest management, or harvesting logistics. Growers should supplement this guidance with local agronomic expertise.

This publication describes the seven major pruning systems used in commercial cherry tree orchards in Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Michigan. Cherry growers around the world use many training systems, both supported and freestanding. This publication describes the commercially successful systems known as Kym Green Bush (KGB), Spanish Bush (SB), Steep Leader (SL), Super Slender Axe (SSA), Tall Spindle Axe (TSA), Upright Fruiting Offshoots (UFO), Upright Fruiting Offshoots "Y" Trellis (UFO-Y) and Vogel Central Leader (VCL), all of which can be achieved with a whip (vs. feathered) nursery tree. Choosing the right system depends on growing conditions, variety, rootstock, labor availability, and management skills. This training manual provides information needed to choose a training system for new plantings. It also provides important plant-spacing requirements and pruning guidelines through the first three years of a tree's life.
