Detailed Description
Functionality & Mechanism
Developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this application facilitates the systematic collection of family cancer history. The interface captures user-provided data on cancer types and age of diagnosis for blood relatives. An integrated algorithm, based on established clinical guidelines, processes this information to generate a personalized risk assessment for breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancer. The system also constructs a pedigree chart for visualization and provides guidance on subsequent actions, such as clinical consultation.
Evidence & Research Context
- The app's design is grounded in the established epidemiological principle that family health history is a primary determinant of cancer risk.
- The integrated risk assessment algorithm synthesizes user-provided data based on multiple established guidelines for cancer risk stratification, as detailed by the CDC.
- Associated research from the CDC describes the application as a tool to systematize family health history collection for the general public.
- The system is designed to produce organized health data intended for discussion with healthcare providers to inform clinical decision-making.
Intended Use & Scope
This application is intended for use by the general public as a preliminary risk assessment tool. Its primary utility is to organize familial health data to facilitate informed consultations with healthcare providers regarding cancer screening and genetic counseling. The tool's scope is limited to family history; it does not incorporate other lifestyle or physiological risk factors.

My Family Health Portrait: Cancer Mobile App
CDC's Division of Cancer Prevention and Control launched My Family Health Portrait: Cancer (MFHP: Cancer) to help individuals collect their family's history of cancer and learn their risk for breast, ovarian, and colorectal cancers. The app encourages those with increased risk to talk to their health care provider about their risk and ways to manage it. Android users can download the app from Google Play and iOS users can download it from the App Store.
A New CDC Home for Family Health History Tool
The CDC's Office of Public Health Genomics relocated the My Family Health Portrait tool to CDC servers as part of the Public Health Genomics Knowledge Base, after more than a decade of NHGRI hosting. The tool maintains its identity as "the Surgeon General's My Family Health Portrait" with core capabilities remaining unchanged despite the September 6, 2018 transition. NHGRI and CDC continue their collaborative efforts to apply family health history in public health programs for detecting cancer and heart disease risks.
