Detailed Description
Functionality & Mechanism
Developed at the University of Illinois, the MRTN Rate Calculator generates customized nitrogen rate guidelines for corn production. The system integrates a robust database of nitrogen rate trial results from university research centers and commercial farms across Illinois. The interface captures economic variables, including nitrogen and corn prices, to calculate the N rate that maximizes economic return. The computational process synthesizes real-world agronomic response data with prevailing market conditions to deliver a precise, field-relevant recommendation.
Evidence & Research Context
- The calculator's recommendation algorithm is derived from an extensive, continuously updated database of nitrogen rate trials conducted in real-world agricultural settings.
- The system is designed to determine the Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN), the rate that optimizes producer profitability by balancing fertilizer cost against crop value.
- The underlying research protocol emphasizes farmer-engaged data collection on production fields to ensure the model reflects authentic agronomic responses.
- Associated research documents the system's utility in managing the high spatiotemporal variability of corn nitrogen response, a primary challenge in nutrient management.
Intended Use & Scope
This decision-support tool is designed for agricultural producers and crop consultants to inform nitrogen management strategies for corn. Its primary utility is providing research-based N rate guidelines that balance agronomic requirements with economic objectives. The recommendations are derived from Illinois-specific research and are not a substitute for comprehensive soil analysis or professional agronomic consultation.

UIUC Researchers Launch Data-Driven Tool to Help Illinois Farmers Optimize Fertilizer Use
Researchers at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, led by Kaiyu Guan, developed the Maximum Return To Nitrogen (MRTN) Tool to help Illinois corn farmers optimize nitrogen fertilizer use, using data on fertilizer response and prices. The tool allows farmers to "select the district where their farm is located, enter respective management practices, and then calculate" to improve returns while reducing environmental impact. The UIUC team recently added custom report generation features and plans to integrate sustainability metrics such as N-N2O emissions and N-leaching.
app Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council
The Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council updated the MRTN Rate Calculator app with current research values from studies conducted under Dr. Emerson Nafziger's direction and on-farm work by the Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association. The update supports new iOS versions and improves usability for farmers calculating maximum return to nitrogen rates. Users can download the updated app from the Apple App Store by searching for MRTN Rate Calculator.
NEW Guide to Illinois MRTN Available
The Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council developed the MRTN Rate Calculator to help farmers determine optimal nitrogen application rates that maximize economic returns, based on hundreds of nitrogen rate trials conducted across Illinois over five years. The research resulted in a new publication titled "Using the Maximum Return to Nitrogen (MRTN) System in Illinois" that explains the process for determining the nitrogen rate that maximizes dollar return while supporting sound agronomic principles and environmental stewardship.
