Detailed Description
Functionality & Mechanism
Developed by the Veteran's Health Administration, Exposure Ed is a clinical reference tool delivering point-of-care information on military service-related hazards. The system provides structured content on a range of chemical, physical, and environmental exposures to facilitate informed clinical discussions regarding potential health impacts. The interface also details relevant VA programs and benefits, equipping providers to guide Veterans on eligibility for specialized care and resources. The tool is designed to support direct patient communication during clinical encounters.
Evidence & Research Context
- The app supports the Exposure-Informed Care (EIC) model, a clinical framework developed by the Department of Veterans Affairs to address patient health concerns.
- Associated research describes the EIC model as a method for validating patient concerns and building trust when exposure history and causation are uncertain.
- The tool directly facilitates a core EIC principle: integrating specific exposure-related information and risk communication into clinical encounters.
- By delivering standardized point-of-care content, the app functions as an implementation support tool for the EIC model's workforce education and development objectives.
Intended Use & Scope
Exposure Ed is intended for healthcare providers as a point-of-care educational resource. Its primary utility is to inform clinical discussions with Veterans about potential military-related exposures and guide them toward relevant VA benefits. The system is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace comprehensive clinical evaluation or confirm exposure causality for specific health conditions.

Exposure Ed
The Veterans Health Administration developed Exposure Ed to deliver information on military-related exposures to health care providers, helping them have informed discussions with Veterans about exposure-related health concerns. The app provides access to information on exposure-related programs and benefits offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs while helping Veterans assess their participation eligibility. The tool features six main sections including Exposures, Date & Location, Conflicts, and PACT Act Benefits information.
Veterans Can Now Learn About Their Toxic Exposure Risks with New VA App
The Department of Veterans Affairs developed Exposure Ed to help veterans learn about toxic exposure risks from their military service, originally designing the app for VA providers before expanding access to all users. The app allows veterans to search exposures by conflict ranging from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and provides access to studies, benefit applications, and VA programs like the "Agent Orange Registry Health Exam for Veterans." Veterans can download the app through the Apple Store or Google Play with no log-on required.
Have you heard of Exposure Ed?
VA launched the mobile app Exposure Ed in 2015 to help health care providers better address Veterans' questions about the health effects of military exposures and exposure-related benefits and services. The app allows providers to quickly identify potential military exposures by searching date, location, or conflict, and information can be pasted into notes that can be emailed or printed for Veterans. While designed for health care providers, Exposure Ed is free and available to the public through the Apple Store, Google Play, and VA's mobile website.
